Who was Christopher Newport and what part did he play in the Jamestown Colony? What happened to him after Jamestown? This is one of the few published accounts of the life of this extraordinary sea-captain, one of the most successful of Queen Elizabeth's privateers, who led the first fleet to the James River, ensured that the colony was supplied by four further trans-Atlantic voyages and then started a new career as a Captain of the East India Company, sailing three times to the Spice Islands of the Far East.
This is as near to the truth of what we know about the lives of both John Rolfe of Heacham and his second wife, Pocahontas, daughter of Powhatan, Paramount Chief of the Algonquian Indians of the Chesapeake. The son of a Norfolk merchant, Rolfe sailed with the great fleet to supply Jamestown in 1609,  and met and married the young Indian 'Princess' Pocahontas who had been captured by the English. He became the father of the Virginia tobacco industry. She became a Christian, was baptised Rebecca, and came with Rolph and their child, Thomas, to London to meet James I and Queen Anne, but Pocahontas sadly died on their way back to Virginia

5. 'Bartholomew Gosnold of Otley and America' by John Haden and Y7 Students of Woodbridge School  First published by Barny Books in 2007.  ISBN: 978.1.903172.90.2  Pages:80 Retail Price: £5.99

This fully illustrated account of the life of the man who is acknowledged as the 'prime mover' of the Jamestown adventure starts at Otley Hall, his family's home in rural Suffolk, follows his career through Cambridge University and the Inns of Court and  his first voyage to America, where he discovered and named Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, before returning to England to plan the great Virginia voyage. His early death in Jamestown and the discovery of what are still thought to be his bones leads to another exploration, of DNA and genealogy.

Now that the five books in the ARIES Jamestown Series have been published, the project moves on to the next phase of early American History, the story of New England, beginning with the Pilgrim Fathers

6. 'William Brewster of the Pilgrim Fathers' by John Haden and the pupils of the Parish Church Primary School, Gainsborough   First published by Barny Books in 2007  ISBN: 978.1.903172.73.5    80 pages  Retail Price: £6.99

This fully illustrated account of the life of William Brewster, the leader of the Scrooby Separatists, takes readers to the villages of his youth, his time at University and in the service of Queen Elizabeth's Secretary and his service in the Low Countries, to the planning of the escape from England when freedom of worship was denied to them. Settling for a time in Holland, Brewster got into trouble as a printer and with the group who became the Pilgrim Fathers left Holland, and with others from England, sailed in the Mayflower to find a new home at Plymouth Colony, the 1620 English settlement where they found a New World and the freedom to live and worship as they chose.

7. 'Ending the Slave Trade with William Wilberforce of Hull' by the Pupils of St Nicholas Primary School, Hull, with John Haden   First published by Barny Books in 2007 ISBN: 978.1.903172.87.2  80 pages Retail Price: £5.99

8. 'The Wesleys of Epworth' by John Haden and Pupils from the Isle of Axholme Primary Schools. First published by Barny Books in 2009 ISBN:978-1-906542-02-3 80 pages Retail Price: £5.99

This is the story of the family whose famous sons, John and Charles Wesley, founded the Methodist Church and provided that church with wonderful hymns. It is also the story of how God's grace triumphed over human weakness. It includes an account of the Wesley's role in the early years of the  English colony of Georgia, which developed into the 13th state of the USA.

Written with the help of pupils from four primary schools in the Epworth area, it was published on the three hundredth anniversary of the fire which burnt down Epworth Rectory and from which John Wesley was rescued as 'a brand plucked from the burning'.

This account of the life of William Wilberforce was published to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the passing of the Act to end the Slave Trade. It includes work by pupils of the Hull primary school which developed from the work of the charity which supported the families and children of Hull seafarers. It also includes material on slavery today and is an excellent resource for schools studying the history of slavery. Launched by Gervase Phinn in October 2007 at the Streetlife Museum in the City of Kingston on Hull.

Further planned titles of books to be written with schools:   William Penn of Jordans and Pennsylvania, The English Catholics and the Founding of Maryland,  Two Lincolnshire Annes, Hutchinson and Bradstreet.
